The archaeological team said the mission was conducted by Dr. Zahi Hawass to find the lost city under the sand dunes.

“The city is estimated to be 3,000 years old and dates back to the reign of Amenhotep III, and continues to be used by Tutankhamun and Ay. Many of the search missions came from outside the country before failing to find the city, “he said.

The site of the city found is believed to be the largest administrative and industrial settlement of the era, located on the western edge of Luxor.

“The discovery of this lost city is the second most important archaeological discovery since Tutankhamun’s tomb,” said Betsy Bryan, a professor of Egyptology at Johns Hopkins University and a member of the archaeological mission, in a statement.

“Its discovery will give us a rare picture of the life of the ancient Egyptians when the empire was at its richest,” he said.

The lost city is the latest in a series of archaeological discoveries unearthed in recent months across the country that bring new insights into the dynasty that ruled ancient Egypt. The Egyptian government hopes such findings will support the country’s all-important tourism industry, which has in recent years been hit by the coronavirus pandemic, attacks by Islamist militants and political instability.
