This was stated by the Hero of Kazakhstan, Major General of the Air Force, the first Kazakh cosmonaut Toktar Aubakirov on the air of the state TV channel “Khabar 24” (practically the only channel currently operating in the country).

He clarified that the organization’s troops, including Russian ones, should be brought into the territory of Kazakhstan, since the republic’s law enforcement agencies cannot cope with the riots.

“Let’s resort to the help of those with whom we have concluded an agreement. This agreement is the CSTO. If the CSTO troops enter here, it will not be superfluous,” Aubakirov said.

He noted that the protesters destroyed Alma-Ata, “the most flourishing city, pride, cultural center.” He also recalled the destruction of shops and the fact that the military, young cadets, were stripped during the pogroms.

“We must call from a large association. Not from one country. If one country enters, our neighbors, then they will not come out. Let this large association enter and help us with the troops,” he said.

Protests in Kazakhstan

In connection with the protests, the country’s President Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev accepted the resignation of the government. He decided to transfer the interim duties of prime minister to Alikhan Smailov.

In the capital of the country Nur-Sultan, the city of Almaty, Almaty and Mangistau regions from 5 to 19 January declared a state of emergency.

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry advises Ukrainians to refrain from visiting Kazakhstan because of the protests.

Local Telegram channels report that the protesters seized the presidential residence and other administrative buildings. According to unconfirmed information, Tokayev and his family were allegedly evacuated to Russia.

Today, January 5, Tokayev made an appeal to the people and stated that he intends to act “as tough as possible.” The President also said that he would soon come up with “new proposals for the political transformation of Kazakhstan.”

Press Secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov said that Kazakhstan did not ask for help from Russia due to massive protests.
