“The Reading Philosopher” by Jana-Honore Fragonara

The masterpiece hung on the wall of the living room of the house for about a hundred years, for years no one paid attention to it.

A family from the department of Marne, France, found in the living room of the inherited apartment a forgotten painting of the 18th century – “The Reading Philosopher” by Jean-Honore Fragonard. Its cost is estimated at millions of euros. About it writes France24.

“Experts immediately recognized the characteristic handwriting of the painter, and the last doubts about the authorship were removed by Fragonard’s signature on the back of the canvas,” the journalists say.

Experts suggest that the painting was painted in the 1770s.

At the end of June, The Reading Philosopher will be put up for auction. It is expected that during the auction, the cost of the painting will reach 1.5-2 million.

French painter and printmaker Jean-Honore Fragonard (1732-1806) is one of the most famous representatives of the Rococo style. Fragonard’s works sold well until the French Revolution, after which the painter went bankrupt and left Paris. Later, the artist returned to the capital, where he died in 1806 in obscurity and poverty.

In 2013, Fragonard’s Portrait of François-Henri D’Arcourt was auctioned for $ 27.9 million. All proceeds from sales were sent to the German branch of the UNICEF Children’s Fund.
