The Exhaustion of Keeping Up with the News: A Columnist’s Reflection

“Sometimes I feel completely exhausted by all this madness,” she shares with readers. Daphne then writes that she has read that there are more and more news avoiders: people who skip the world news, have deleted all apps from their phone and no longer watch the news. Why? ‘Because they simply can’t handle it anymore.’

The former model is also slowly becoming one of those people. ‘I understand very well that this is a luxury position. That as a Dutch person I have the privilege to say: I can no longer handle all this news about mass slaughter. Because the people who suffer from it, who experience it every day, who are the true victims, who hear the bombs whistling around their ears every day – you can bet that they can no longer cope with it at all,” she writes.

Still, she believes it is good for your mental health to sometimes leave your phone off for a few days, avoid the news and just be. That’s exactly what she’s been trying to do for the past few days and although it has indeed reduced the knot in her stomach a bit, she also feels quite guilty about it.

Daphne continues: ‘Because all those millions of people in the war zones would like to be there too. But on the other hand: what do they benefit from whether a certain Daphne from Muiderberg follows the news or not? What do they care that people are fighting each other online here about a post on X or a table discussion at Op1? The victims whose families are being torn apart just want it to stop.”

Daphne knows that as a columnist she is expected to give her opinion, but concludes her column with that when she sees ‘the terrible photos’ in the newspapers, all she can think is: words are not enough.
