Dr. Han Dong-ha of Oriental Medicine (Director of Han Dong-ha Oriental Medical Clinic)

In the fields, you can easily see grass with pretty purple flowers. Even if it is not a field, it is often decorated in early fall bouquets. It is a gentian flower. The flower language of gentian flowers is ‘sorrow’. However, Gentian has the effect of extinguishing fire and reducing damp heat with the coolness that overcomes sadness. Let’s take a look at the efficacy of gentian today.

Gentiana (Gentiana scabra Bunge) is a perennial herb belonging to the Gentian family and Gentian species, and grows in fields in mountainous regions across the country. In Korean, it is called ‘Gwanampul’. It is commonly used as gentian, and all types of gentian, including sword-leafed gentian and large gentian, are considered gentian. In Chinese characters, it is also expressed as Choryongdam (草龍膽), Yongdamcho (龍膽草), etc., but in this column, it will mainly be referred to as Yongdam.

The literal translation of Yongdam (龍膽) is called dragon’s gallbladder. <본초강목>‘The leaves are like dragon gyu (龍葵) and the taste is gall.[담(膽)]He said, “It was named so because it is written like this.” Yonggyu is in the dark. But in reality, the leaves are not that similar. Anyway, it was named so because it tastes very bitter.

Gentian root is mainly used medicinally. <동의보감>In ‘I have a very cold temperament'[大寒] He said, “It tastes bitter and is not poisonous.” When used as medicine, because it has a strong cold effect, it is soaked in alcohol and then roasted until black. However, if you want to maintain its effectiveness, you can use it as is. <본초강목>In ‘Penis in the foot palace'[간(肝)]and joksoyanggyeong[담(膽)]‘It is a medicine used for mood swings.’ In other words, gentian root is commonly used as a liver medicine.

Gentian It is especially effective for eye diseases. <동의보감>‘Brightens the eyes and cools the liver. He said, “It is definitely a medicine used for eye diseases.” <본초강목>It is said, ‘It removes symptoms such as yellowish tint in the whites of the eyes or red, swollen eyes, or unbearable growth of fat in the pupils of the eyes.’ <급유방>It is also said that ‘it treats cases where the eyes become red, swollen, and painful.’ In Oriental medicine, the eyes are seen as a place where the energy of the liver is connected, so Gentian can be seen as treating eye diseases while removing moist heat from the liver.

Gentian is good for sore throat. <본초강목>In ‘Cures sore throat. For symptoms of fever and pain in the throat, mix gentian root in water and take it.He said. Gentian has a strong anti-inflammatory and analgesic effect, so it is good for general sore throat and tonsillitis.

Gentian is good for children’s games. <동의보감>It is said that it ‘helps the liver and gallbladder energy and stops being startled and afraid.’ <본초강목>‘It treats the morale of the liver. It is said to treat symptoms such as enteric fever, bone fever, and liver disease in children. It also has a strong antipyretic effect, so it is effective for febrile convulsions in addition to general competition.

Gentian Eliminates osteoporosis. <동의보감>In ‘Osteopathy'[骨熱]He said, ‘Get rid of it.’ Some people complain that they feel steam rising from their bones. It’s osteoarthritis. Osteoporosis occurs when heat comes from deep within. A simple cold causes heat to appear on the skin, but after chronic wasting disease or overwork, bone fever occurs deep inside.

Gentian Even in febrile infectious diseases use. <동의보감>It is said to ‘treat stomach fever, infectious diseases, fever, fever, dysentery, etc.’ Gentian is helpful for fever caused by infectious diseases and diarrhea caused by bacterial or viral enteritis.

Gentian is also good for dermatitis and mucosal inflammation. <본초강목>‘It treats wounds (瘡) and scabies (疥). It is said to treat carbuncles (ulcers or boils) and mouth sores (glossitis or stomatitis). In the case of dermatitis, it is especially effective for ringworm in the groin and inner thigh dermatitis. These are all areas where the liver meridian flows. Gentian is also good for general eczema.

Gentian removes bitterness from the mouth. <의방합부>It is said, ‘If you use it when your mouth is dry, drink a decoction of Siho and Gentian herb.’ If excessive tension persists, saliva production stops, the mouth dries out, and a bitter taste is felt. Other symptoms include gastrointestinal diseases, immune-related diseases, cerebrovascular diseases, general weakness, diabetes, etc.

The most representative prescription containing gentian 용담사간탕(gentian liver soup)There is. <동의보감>‘It treats swelling of the vagina in men, swelling in the vagina of the vagina in women due to moist heat in the liver, and moist, itchy, and pus-producing penis. Choryongdam, Siho, and Taeksa, 1 don each, Moktong, Psyllium, Jeokbokryeong, Saengjihwang, Angelica (main tax), Gardenia Jain, Golden, and Licorice 5p each. ‘Cut these medicines into 1 tablet, boil it in water and drink it on an empty stomach.’

Yongdamsagantang is an effective prescription for eczema of the genital area in men and women, urethritis, vaginitis in women, photocystitis, and ringworm in the groin.. It is also effective for shingles on the side area. The indications for Yongdamsagantang are irrelevant even if viewed as the indications for Yongdam.

Gentian contains secoiridoid glycosides. Secoiridoid is a type of phenolic compound that exhibits antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer activities. Olives are also rich in ingredients and are a representative ingredient of the Mediterranean diet. Gentian has been studied in laboratory studies to have effects such as inhibiting NO production, anti-inflammation, enhancing gastrointestinal motility, promoting digestive juice secretion, treating eczema and dermatitis, and antibacterial and antifungal effects.

Gentian should not be taken on an empty stomach. Due to its cold nature, there is a risk of diarrhea. Additionally, it is said to have a diuretic effect, preventing urination. <본초강목>It was said, ‘If you eat it on an empty stomach, you will not be able to hold in your urine.’ Because it has strong medicinal properties, it is safe to take within 30 minutes after a meal.

Gentian Do not take if you have a weak stomach or anemia. <본초정화>‘It is a medicine that is pure yin because its taste is very bitter and its nature is also very cold. He said, “Even if it removes actual heat, people with an empty stomach and insufficient blood cannot use it even as a light test.” In particular, it can be seen that it is not suitable for small people.

If you thought of gentian only as an ornamental plant, it would be a big mistake. There are red gentian flowers, but they are mainly purple. The purple and blue gentian flowers seem to say, ‘I am cold and cold.’ The root is bitter, like eating gallbladder. but There is no herb that compares to gentian in reducing moist heat in the liver and treating inflammation. The saying ‘medicine that is good for the body is bitter’ seems to have originated from gentian.
