The documentary “Le cri des goélands” exposes the problem of waste treatment, from Corsica to Occitania

Turquoise blue waters and exceptional natural spaces, this is what we know about Corsican landscapes. However, the documentary shows us another facet of the island. Darker: that of the hell of waste, part of which is sent to Occitania, to treatment plants, such as in Nîmes or Perpignan.

In Corsica, facing the sea, hides in the background, a decor and perfumes not the most remarkable: wild dumps, car wrecks, household appliances, household waste “we produce more than 730 kg of waste per year, which is much more than the national average, which is around 525 kg (…) However, the island has two landfill centers, a sorting plant and not the slightest plant recycling“.

Corsica suffers from its waste. They generate significant pollution, either by their accumulation in the ground, or through the trucks that regularly use the island’s roads to deliver the waste to one of the landfill centers such as Viggianellu, a small village in 820 inhabitants.

However, the inhabitants, very attached to their heritage and the beauty of the island, have mobilized on several occasions for the preservation of their territory. For example, 30 years ago, the island of beauty was the first in France to ban the use of plastic bags in supermarkets. But what happened? The question is asked: “how did we get here?”

Failing to initiate our green revolution, we have ended up burying 5 million tons of garbage and exporting to the continent what the saturated soils can no longer absorb.

Gisèle Casabianca, Corsican director

Every morning, trucks loaded with garbage embark on boats: direction the continent and other European countries. Occitanie, with its treatment plants located in Nîmes and Perpignan is largely concerned. Today, it finds itself having to treat more than 83,000 tonnes of annual waste from Corsica.

However, on the island, citizens are committed on a daily basis to preserving their environment. Committees have been created. But what about the collective consciousness? And what roles do elected officials play in this situation? Are there any political or other blockages? Are private interests opposed to the collective interest?

Answers exposed in Gisèle Casabianca’s documentary, “Le cri des goélands”, to be seen on Thursday May 5, 2022, at 10:30 p.m.
