AA / New York / Islam is True

The Türkevi (Turkish House), which has become a center of attraction for social and cultural events as well as diplomacy since the first day of its inauguration in New York on September 20, 2022, was once again the scene of a heavy diplomatic traffic during the week of the 78th meetings of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly this year.

The Turkish House, located directly opposite the United Nations building, was one of the centers of intense diplomatic meetings in New York, which hosted more than 150 heads of state and government and hundreds of top diplomats level during the United Nations week.

President of the Republic of Turkiye Recep Tayyip Erdogan met with more than 15 leaders and delegations from Asia to Europe, from the Middle East to the Americas, in the Turkish House, which had already been visited by many leaders of state and government and delegations last year.

In New York, where he arrived to attend the meetings of the United Nations General Assembly, President Erdogan first received the Georgian Prime Minister, Irakli Garibashvili, within the framework of bilateral contacts.

Afterwards, Erdogan handed over identity cards to the Ahiska (Meskhetian) Turks who became citizens of the Republic of Türkiye and took a souvenir photo with them.

Another very interesting meeting took place on the first day between the Turkish Head of State and Elon Musk, the founder of Tesla and SpaceX. Indeed, Erdogan invited Musk, who came to the meeting with his son in his arms, to install the 7th Tesla factory in Türkiye. The Turkish president also gave Musk the English version of the books he wrote, as well as a soccer ball for his son.

On the first day, Erdogan also gave an interview to the American channel PBS, at the Turkish house.

– The “century of Türkiye” in the Turkish household

On the second day, President Erdogan hosted a roundtable discussion with the participation of representatives of some think tanks operating in the United States.

During the program organized by the Communications Directorate of the Turkish Presidency and the Foundation for Political, Economic and Social Research (SETA), Erdogan emphasized that Türkiye is preparing for the second century of the Republic with the vision titled “Century of Türkiye” and spoke about the contributions of Türkiye to the resolution of global and regional problems.

Later, Erdogan attended the signing ceremony organized under the leadership of his wife Emine Erdogan, as part of the event “Towards a Global Zero Waste Movement”. Erdogan was the first person to sign the “Zero Waste Global Goodwill Declaration”, which was opened for signature on the website to ensure individual participation in the movement led by Emine Erdogan.

In addition to the two high-attendance programs held on the same day, the Turkish House hosted President Erdogan’s meetings with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, Polish President Andrzej Duda, and Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.

As part of the UN General Assembly week, President Erdogan also held bilateral meetings at Türkevi with Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Greek Prime Minister Kiryakos Mitsotakis and Prime Minister Malaysian Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

On the last day of his trip, President Erdogan also received representatives of the American Jewish community “Roof Organizations” at the Turkish House and spoke with Turkish journalists.

The Türkevi also hosted events, ceremonies and bilateral meetings in the presence of the Turkish First Lady, Emine Erdogan.

Among these events, the most notable was the environmental event “Towards a Global Zero Waste Movement”, which was also attended by President Erdogan, while Emine Erdogan hosted the spouses of heads of state, including the mayor of New York Eric Adams, senior UN officials and diplomats from other countries.

– The Turkish House: A center of attraction added to the New York skyline

The building that houses today’s Türkevi was purchased 44 years ago from IBM, a technology giant, under difficult conditions, with the moral support of the Turkish community in the United States and the vision of the late Foreign Minister Ihsan Sabri Çaglayangil. It was demolished and then rebuilt in the same location after serving Turkish diplomatic missions from 1977 to 2014.

After laying its foundations by the Turkish President on September 18, 2017, the Turkish House, which was inaugurated by Erdogan on September 20, 2022, continues to be the center of attraction for diplomacy and social and cultural events in New York since the first day it opened.

The 35-story building, which opens its doors not only to Turks but also to foreigners for many events, is one of the most interesting buildings in New York with its traditional Turkish, especially Seljuk, architectural motifs and shaped silhouette of tulip that rises towards the sky.

The building, visible from Downtown Manhattan, the East River and Long Island City, has a storage system that allows rainwater to be collected and used, and has a “Leed Silver” certificate under ecological construction, it is an environmentally friendly skyscraper.

The Turkish House houses the Türkiye Permanent Mission to the United Nations, the Türkiye Consulate General in New York and the Representative Office of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. Covering an area of approximately 20,000 square meters and a height of 171 meters, the building also has an auditorium for 200 people, meeting and exhibition rooms, parking for 20 vehicles and housing.
