The dengue epidemic is slowing but still not over

Health authorities detected 84 new cases of dengue fever, mainly type 2, between January 27 and February 5. It’s almost half as much as the previous fortnight.

It has already been ten months since a dengue epidemic swept through Polynesia. According to the latest figures from health authorities, published on Wednesday, more than 3,000 people have been affected since last February, when the first cases occurred. The epidemic was declared in April 2019 in Tahiti and then in the second half of the year in several Raromatai, Austral and Marquesas islands. Main responsible: type 2 dengue fever, which has not circulated in the fenua for twenty years and against which the majority of the population is not immune.

But the news is rather positive: only 57 new cases of type 2 dengue fever were reported between January 27 and February 5, to which are added 27 cases of untyped dengue. Either 84 new patients, including a third of young people under the age of 20, compared to 143 the previous fortnight.

The flu to watch, the coronavirus still not in fenua

The Health Department still calls for vigilance and “Everyone’s responsibility”. The elimination of breeding places should be reinforced during the rainy season, by removing all areas of fresh water stagnation once a weekelder “ remind the authorities, who also call to protect themselves from bites and quickly consult a doctor in case of fevers or muscle pain.

Another illness to watch out for: the flu, which represented around 50 new cases between January 27 and February 5, and which seems to be more and more intense in recent weeks. The coronavirus has still not affected Polynesia. More than 98% of the 75,000 cases of global infections have been recorded inside China, where almost all of the 2,120 deaths from the disease have also occurred.
