Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The World Health Organization (WHO) hopes that the coronavirus crisis can end in less than two years. This was conveyed by WHO Chairman Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on Friday (21/8/2020), as quoted by Reuters.
Tedros gave an example, the Spanish Flu outbreak that swept the world in 1918 took two years to end.
“Our current situation is with more technology, of course with more connectivity, the virus has a greater chance of spreading, it can move fast,” he said.
“At the same time we have the technology and know-how to stop it.”
More than 22.85 million people have been reported infected by the coronavirus globally and 793,983 have died, according to a Reuters tally.
Previously, Tedros also advised the world community not to give up. “Behind these statistics there is a lot of pain and suffering … But I want to make it clear: there are green shoots of hope,” said Tedros.
“It’s never too late to reverse the outbreak.”
Tedros gave examples of countries that have succeeded in suppressing Covid-19, such as Rwanda and New Zealand, which on Monday said it planned to open a virus-free “travel bubble” with the Cook Islands.
