The Controversial Situation Surrounding Antwerp’s New Stadium and Financial Figures Revealed

The new stadium, and especially the whole situation around it, continues to stir the mood. Now some additional figures have surfaced.

Despite the title win and the Croky Cup, things have not remained quiet at Antwerp. The quarrel between Paul Gheysens, chairman and owner of Antwerp and Tania Mintjens, the landowner, has already caused a split among the supporters. The morning has reviewed Ghelamco’s annual accounts and found some interesting things.

Paul Gheysens

Under the leadership of Paul Gheysens, Ghelamco has already earned a lot of money with all kinds of construction projects at home and abroad. For the time being, this has not been successful at Antwerp. Something that is not incomprehensible because he has already pumped 150 million euros into the club. This was successful because not only was the club saved from destruction. He also managed to win the Croky Cup twice since promotion to the Jupiler Pro League and play champion.

The Bosuil Stadium, the revenue model

The Bosuil Stadium was worn down to the thread and needed more than a renovation. For example, two new grandstands were built. Ghelamco’s annual accounts show that the two grandstands he has already built are estimated by experts from the construction company at 85 million euros. However, he invested only 21 million euros in the construction of grandstand 1, according to Gazet van Antwerpen. The 2019 annual accounts show that grandstand 4 only cost 11.2 million euros.

For both grandstands, Antwerp has now been paying a lease sum of around 7 million euros per year for fifteen years. In the long term, this will yield him 105 million euros, just for the first two stands.

Ghelamco Arena or Club Brugge’s new stadium?

After 15 years, the Antwerp club will pay a sum of 105 million for two new stands. In comparison, the entire construction of the Ghelamco Arena cost 76 million euros. The new stadium of Club Brugge is budgeted at 100 million euros.

Antwerp will therefore pay 5 million euros more for two stands less than their competitors.

What about a new owner?

As long as Paul Gheysens remains the owner of Antwerp, there is no immediate problem. Then there is a pocket-to-pocket operation with this current leasing construction. If he sells the club, the new owner will have to pay this and this will also be at the expense of the operating resources of the club.
