The Coma 2: Vicious Sisters im Test – Horror-Adventure für Nintendo Switch

If you had to crack the predecessor due to the level of difficulty and some rather illogical passages and game elements, you should treat yourself to the successor with The Coma 2: Vicious Sisters. The title makes things a lot better in many respects and keeps you going with even more atmosphere and playful elements. We met at the Nintendo Switch ventured into the parallel world The Coma and escaped from our English teacher’s “twin sister” with some really good shock moments. So completely normal school life, right ?!

Bad English teacher, paranormal school life and a friend in a coma

In The Coma 2: Vicious Sisters you take on the role of Mina Park, a student from Sehwa High School. Fans will especially be familiar with the name of the school, because it was the setting for the first part. Mina is actually a normal girl. She tries to manage her everyday school life, which is already difficult enough, but at the same time has to grapple with her best friend in dispute and her good friend Youngho Choi (by the way, the main character from the first part!) Has fallen into a sudden coma.

If all of that wasn’t difficult enough, the school will once again come across the supernatural parallel world The Coma, into which Mina will inevitably be torn and which will deal with all kinds of monsters. The particularly nasty thing in the world is the creature “Dark Song”, because it is a bestial parallel version of Mina’s English teacher! It all sounds a bit like a Korean horror B movie, but it is much more exciting than you might imagine.

If you now see parallels to the extremely successful series Stranger Things or to the horror adventure Silent Hill, you are definitely not wrong. The transformation of the school or other locations in the parallel world certainly has features of the ingenious Capcom game. The tentacle-like plants and scenarios are also reminiscent of the successful Netflix series. Fans of both media will definitely get their money’s worth here.

What a sound: can you hear dark song coming? Run!

The heart of the game, however, is not the above-average story told about Mina’s everyday life and problems, but above all the shocking appearances of her evil English teacher and by that we mean the monster from the parallel world. You should definitely play The Coma 2: Vicious Sisters with headphones, anything else would be an absolute waste of atmosphere.

Dark Song announces itself with such a well-done sound backdrop that your breath is audible with its clearly audible steps. Last but not least, this is reminiscent of games like Outlast or Alien Isolation, in which you constantly have to pay attention to the sounds around you in order to hear opponents early. Then it’s time to run away and hide. To make matters worse, this is reinforced by quick-time events that you have to carry out while running away. If they succeed, the hide-and-seek game is usually crowned with success. If you fail, Dark Song will surely track you down.

The oppressive atmosphere created by the good soundscape and the quick-time events is absolutely worthy of a horror game. You never really feel safe at any time because you can never be sure not to suddenly hear the steps of Dark Song. When the bestial teacher sees Mina from the parallel world, she roars with a shattering scream and sprints towards her! So The Coma 2: Vicious Sisters plays properly with the fears of the players and that is actually the core of a horror game.

Successful common thread with really nice pictures

What is particularly impressive is the tight narrative of the story. The Coma 2: Vicious Sisters gets down to business very quickly and offers a very visible red thread through the story. Fans of the first part of The Coma will appreciate the combination of elements from the predecessor and will also be very happy to have Youngho Choi involved. Here the developers have learned from their predecessor.

By the way, the picturesque backdrop is once again impressive. We felt like we were playing a mix of anime and manga all the time. The really well-managed drawing style extends across the entire game and does not subside in any form. Together with the successful soundtrack and the acoustics, the interactive anime is a stunner. Especially fans of the genre get their money’s worth here.
