The CHUV recommends avoiding anti-inflammatory drugs if possible

The CHUV in Lausanne published on Sunday a warning against the use of anti-inflammatory drugs in case of influenza state possibly caused by the virus COVID-19. Paracetamol alone is recommended for severe fever, writes the hospital.

This decision is made “on the basis of the current state of knowledge”. The drugs concerned are anti-inflammatory drugs (ibuprofen, ketoprofen, naproxen, diclofenac, etc.) and cortisone derivatives. This recommendation also applies to children, adds the establishment.

People who are already on anti-inflammatory drugs are advised to consult their doctor. “The authorities have decided to forward the experts’ message in order to warn the population and health professionals,” the cantonal doctor at Keystone-ATS said in writing, without giving further details. The authorities call for “vigilance” regarding the information circulating on social networks.

Saturday, the French Minister of Health Olivier Véran had already warned against taking anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen or cortisone in people infected with the coronavirus. According to him, these drugs could be “a factor of aggravation of the infection”. “If you have a fever, take paracetamol,” he said.
