A brit AVForums specialty portal organized an interesting competition between four high-end OLED televisions for the expert audience they organized to decide which one was the best.

In addition to the Philips OLED + 936, the Sony AF90J, Panasonic HZ2000 and LG G1 competed, and all four devices were purchased at a retail store and carefully disguised (blind test) so that none of AVForums’ 27 jury members would know which model to vote for – in order to achieve an objective result that is free from brand bias. To further ensure a level playing field, tests began with AVForums editorial experts calibrating all four devices separately to the same standard – effectively minimizing the potential for unique signal processing, allowing for basic technology differences between brands.

Test participants were presented with a series of 11 clips, first in calibrated and then in Vivid / Dynamic mode. Each series of clips was played twice and viewers were asked to change their seating to minimize the effect of the viewing angle. Looking at the reviews received in the calibrated setting, 28% of participants answered “they have no preference,” giving a similar score to all four TVs. The devices were then switched to “Vivid” or “Dynamic” mode, as this is the mode used by each manufacturer to demonstrate the best performance of the entire PQ (image enhancement) signal processing and allows direct comparison of the PQ technology of each manufacturer. In the Vivid / Dynamic setting, the differences were much more pronounced: 53% of the enthusiastic audience rated Philips OLED + 936 as the best, while 22% voted second-place Panasonic. The overall result brought Philips a 36% win and Panasonic a second place finish with 23%.
