The bridge connecting the pier to the port of Nusa Penida in Bali collapses, 35 people fall into the sea

DENPASAR, KOMPAS.COM – The bridge that connects the main pier with the boat (pontoon speed boat) to the crossing port Nusa PenidaKlungkung, Bali collapsed on Thursday (12/15/2022).

As a result of this accident, as many as 35 passengers who were waiting in line to board the ship fell freely overboard.

Klungkung Police Public Relations Chief Iptu Agus Widiono said the incident allegedly occurred because the bridge was overloaded.

“This (accident) resulted in no fatalities and only a few passengers sustained minor injuries,” he said in a written statement on Thursday.

He explained that the incident happened at 4.45 pm WITA, when the passengers, dominated by foreign nationals (foreigners), were queuing to board the vessel which was about to pass through Sanur Port, Denpasar, Bali.

In an instant the bridge collapsed causing the 35 people who were on it to fall into the sea.

“Around 35 passengers tried to cross the connecting bridge at the same time, with the contours of the bridge not allowing them to pass,” he said.

Widiono said that after the incident, the passengers who fell overboard continued their journey using the same boat to Sanur Port, Denpasar.

Klungkung Regent I Nyoman Suwirta, said the port had just been built and had been handed over to UPT Nusa Penida’s management unit, on Dec. 5, 2022.

For this, Suwirta ordered the port management to find the cause of the collapse of the bridge.

“This is a lesson for the managers and operators of speedboats so that at the port (there is no accumulation of passengers), because at the port, people cannot keep moving and do not stand still or pile one at a time,” She said.
