Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro said today that he knows how the war between Russia and Ukraine can be stopped and that he will offer it to his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky, with whom he will speak by phone next week, Reuters reported.
“I will tell him my opinion, what I think. The solution to this. I know how this can be solved. But I will not tell anyone,” Bolsonaro said during a visit to the northeastern Brazilian state of Maranhao. “The resolution of this case would be like the one reached in 1982, when the war between Argentina and Great Britain ended,” he added, without giving further details.
In 1982, Argentina and Britain had a brief conflict over sovereignty over the Falkland Islands, known in Argentina as the Malvinas. The conflict began in April 1982 when Argentine troops landed on the British-held islands and London sent a navy to retake them. The ill-equipped Argentine troops did not stand much of a chance, and Buenos Aires announced its capitulation two months later, Reuters recalls.
Bolsonaro and Zelensky are expected to talk on July 18. The Brazilian president said that his Ukrainian counterpart proposed the conversation, and he immediately agreed.
In February, a few days before the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Brazilian president visited his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, in Moscow. For now, Brazil takes a neutral position in the conflict and continues to trade with Moscow.
