[사진= 게티이미지뱅크]As the hot summer ends, the dropping temperatures signal that the time to prepare for vaccinations is coming. In addition to the flu shot, now the corona vaccine has become a preventive shot that should not be missed. Unlike the flu shot, it is common for the corona vaccine to be hit over the 1st and 2nd rounds.

Not many people worry about whether to get the right arm or the left arm when getting the corona vaccine. Depending on how you feel on the day of the injection, you hold out either your right arm or your left arm to the nurse. But in the future, you will have to change your mind. Because the choice you make matters.

A study published in the medical journal eBioMedicine found that people who received continuous injections in one arm had a stronger immune response than those who alternately received injections in both arms.

Researchers in Germany analyzed the immune responses of 300 people who had never had COVID-19 and who received two doses of Pfizer-BioNtech’s COVID-19 vaccine from March to September 2021. The researchers divided 300 people into two groups, one group received both vaccinations in one arm, and the other group received vaccinations in both arms alternately.

Two weeks after the participants received their injections, the researchers analyzed specific immune cells commonly known as “killer T cells.” The study found these cells in 67 percent of participants who received both injections in the same arm. In contrast, in the group of participants who received injections in both arms alternately, only 43% of the cells were found.

Why are injections in the same arm more effective? “Since the vaccine targets the same lymph nodes and produces more active immune cells that fight infections, repeated injections in the same arm may respond better,” the researchers explained.

Dr. Ofer Levy, director of the Precision Vaccine Program at Children’s Hospital Boston, USA, said: “While more research and data is needed, the results of this study may have implications for vaccines other than COVID-19 and help standardize routine vaccination practices. It can be,” he said.
