The Austrian village of Fucking will disappear from the maps forever in a month

It was a long and still grateful story. Writing about how Fucking people (as they call themselves) have a problem with unruly tourists has always been a bit fun. One could not help but twitch the corner when, in 2009, the village installed cameras aimed at signs to discourage people from having sex in front of them and taking pictures or filming. When there was speculation in 2012 that the village (whose name in English is a vulgar term for intercourse) could be renamed, it stunned everyone. However, most locals still defended the name at the time.

Now everything is different. From January 1, 2021, Fucking will be Fugging. The various jokes in front of the signs, which then appeared on social networks, were no longer entertained by the locals. They would say that the stolen signs would not be counted. It only helped to pour the marks into the concrete resistant to raids by thieves. On Thursday, the district management informed about the outcome of the meeting. The village with about 100 inhabitants located 350 kilometers west of Vienna is renamed.

Mostly English-speaking tourists are to blame. If they were just taking pictures at the signs with a smile, none of the locals would mind. But lewd poses were often the smallest. Many often indulged in sexual practices right in front of the brands, and the installed cameras of 2009 allegedly did not completely prevent this.

“I can confirm the plan to rename the village. I really don’t want to say anything else – we’ve had enough of the media frenzy about this issue in the past, “Andrea Holzner, the mayor of Tarsdorf, to whom Fucking belongs, told the Oberösterreichische Nachrichten.

Petting za rohem

In the past, the locals also saw that their village figured as the background to the story of the book by the Austrian writer Kurt Palma. It was later filmed and the film was called Bad Fucking.

The village was officially first settled around 1070, but local legends say that the Bavarian nobleman Focko settled here in the sixth century. A map from 1825 shows a village called Fuking. Nearby, across the border with Germany, is the village of Petting, which translates into English means cuddling in love.
