The Americans approached Marhoul for a film about McCarthy

Imaging is planned for next year, given the situation in the United States, where coronavirus infection is still spreading rapidly, but nothing is certain. However, if Marhoul starts shooting the film, he will become one of the few Czech directors who shot for Hollywood.

“I am a person who lived in communism for 29 years for them. I lived in that manipulation and fear, so unlike the Americans, I have my own empirical experience. And the more I understand or can understand the problem, “the director said of the reasons why the producers approached him for the biographical drama about McCarthy.

Marhoul considers the theme of the film to be timeless. “These are principles called populism, fascism, manipulation of people and the use of fear to consolidate one’s own power. And today we are in a situation where we have a dozen McCarthyes around us, so here we have Orbán in Hungary, Kaczyński in Poland, Putin in Russia, Donald Trump in America, Boris Johnson in Britain, Bolsonar in Brazil and Andrej Babiš and Mr. Zeman, Said the director.

Meanwhile, Marhoul is working on a screenplay for the film and is “exchanging ideas” with the other screenwriter. At the same time, the cast is being addressed. “But I can’t talk about it yet,” Marhoul added.

Cameraman Vladimír Smutný, who worked with Marhoul on his films Painted Birds, Tobruk and Mazaný Filip, should also take part in the film. The interiors of the drama should be partially shot in Prague in Barrandov. This would allow cooperation with the staff, with which the director works regularly. He’s not worried about filming in the US. “I will have to learn all English terminology, because they use completely different words on the set than us,” said the director.

The American film crew first saw them at work when director Miloš Forman came to Prague in the 1980s to shoot Amadeus. At that time, FAMU warned students that anyone who met this Czech emigrant would be expelled from school. “Miloš Forman and I arranged a secret meeting in Riegrovy sady. Subsequently, Miloš invited me to shoot at the Tyl Theater, and for the first time in my life I saw an American film being made, ”described the Marhoul event.

Joseph Raymond McCarthy was an American Republican politician who began the hunt for communists in America in the 1950s. He claimed that they were everywhere, in the US federal government, in Hollywood, etc. However, he could not prove his claims.
