The air in Bucharest has been toxic for over 24 hours

The air in Bucharest has been toxic for over 24 hours. Representatives of the environmental guard say residential heating is among the polluters. This means that toxic smoke has been coming out of the chimneys in the last few hours.

People admit that they have started warming up with almost everything – from painted and chemically treated furniture to waste – but that’s because they have no other solutions.

Heating a house with wood costs more than 3,000 lei this winter.

This year, as wood is no longer easy to find, and when you find it, it sells black for a lot of money, people end up setting fire to everything.

“To heat my house with wood, I need about 30 million. I also put the furniture. The city hall doesn’t help us at all. Toxic is whatever you put in, but if we have no other option,” says one man.

“The state should come to their aid. In Poland, for example, there is gas for stoves, and they should switch to a more efficient heating system than stoves, switch to power plants, give an incentive to those who want gas. “, said Senator Dragoș Popescu.

Experts say 10 materials should never be set on fire:

  • Painted or chemically treated wood or wood,
  • the plastic,
  • ink paper,
  • flammable substances,
  • pallet,
  • cardboard,
  • vegetable waste,
  • green wood,
  • the garbage.

By comparison, burning paper or cardboard is thirty times more carcinogenic than burning dry wood, while the smoke emitted from burning plastic is up to 700 times more polluting.

From 2019 to 2021, according to ISU data Bucharest-Ilfov, more than 870 tons of waste were burned, and these are only the cases discovered.
