The 6th International Baltic Sea Choir Competition: A Celebration of Choral Excellence in Jūrmala

Rita Sproģe, chairperson of Jūrmala City Council, emphasized: “Jūrmala is a stable partner of the competition, which supports and will support this international event. Jūrmal residents know better than anyone that there are different storms and different waves that suit our city. Chord song gives us the ability to stand tall in all winds. Everyone associates Jurmala with summer, but autumn also has bright colors and we invite you to enjoy them!”

The performance of the choirs will be evaluated by a professional international jury, whose chairman will be Josu Elberdins Badiola (Josu Elberdin BadiolaSpain), Kaje Tanner (Kai TannerEstonia), Haralds Jers (Harald JerGermany), Luka Skakabaroci (Luca ScaccabarozziItaly) and Latvian composer Selga Mence.

As part of the competition, the participants in the Small Hall of the Dzintari Concert Hall will be evaluated in three rounds of the competition – Compulsory program and Free choice program categories. As part of the mandatory program, all choirs will perform a piece from the Romantic era, contemporary music, a song of their country’s people in unison, as well as a piece specially composed for the competition. This year it will be Rihards Dubra’s opus “Hail, O Star of the Ocean” composed for the first competition. In the free-choice program, choirs have the opportunity to perform a program of their choice, showing their own sound and what works best for each. The five choirs with the highest scores will compete in the Grand Prix final.

The three highest scoring choirs will win cash prizes: Grand Prix or the winner of the 1st place will receive the Jūrmala city cup designed by the artist Ginta Grūbe and the Grand Prize – 3,500 euros; 2nd place winner – 2000 euro cash prize, and 3rd place winner – 1000 euro. In addition, the Best Conductor Award (500 euros), the Best Mandatory Composition Award (250 euros), as well as the Audience Sympathy Award from the “Laima” brand, the Best Unison Composer Award from “Musica Baltica”, the Most Attractive Performance – Award from “Innocent PRO” and Dzintari concert hall’s sympathy special award.
