The 2 million people vaccinated with Janssen will now receive the third dose

The Vaccines report, gathered last Wednesday, has proposed to the public health commission that the two million people who were inoculated with the single-dose Janssen vaccine be the next to receive a booster dose. The technicians propose it this way when it is verified that the decrease of the protection.

According to the Vaccines presentation, people vaccinated with a dose of Janssen’s vaccine show, as seen in the different published studies of behavior in real life, on the one hand, an effectiveness lower by 15% -20% compared to infection -symptomatic or asymptomatic- and hospitalizations, with respect to messenger RNA vaccines (Pfizer or Moderna), and on the other, a progressive reduction in effectiveness according to the time elapsed since vaccination. “This decrease in protection in populations most vulnerable to infection and severity, makes it necessary to assess the administration of a booster dose of a vaccine with high immunogenic power such as messenger RNA”, he points out.

In this way, the two million people who received Janssen (over 40 years and groups difficult to undergo medical monitoring) are the third group to be administered a booster dose. So far it has been decided for residents in senior centers, those over 69 years and, now (when approved by the public health commission), those who received the only dose of Janssen.

Those over 40 who received a dose of Janssen will now receive the booster dose of Pfizer or Moderna

The Vaccines presentation recommends that in the event that it is necessary to establish prioritization in the administration of booster doses, it will begin with residents in centers for the elderly (from 6 months of the initial regimen), followed by people of 70 years or more (from 6 months of the initial regimen, and including those vaccinated with 1 dose of Janssen of that age) and subsequently with those vaccinated with a single dose of Janssen vaccine (from 3 months starting dose).

In the case of people with a history of symptomatic or asymptomatic infection by SARS-CoV-2, regardless of the date of confirmation and age, they will be vaccinated as follows: If the infection was before the vaccine was administered Janssen, you don’t need a booster dose. But if the infection occurred after vaccination with Janssen, the booster dose with mRNA will be given at least three months after the infection.

Studies have shown 15-20% loss of protection

The Janssen vaccine represents a turning point in the fight against the pandemic, precisely due to the fact that it was a single dose. The European Commission has reserved 200 million doses, of which 22 million correspond to Spain. With her, the vaccination rate accelerated. In addition, this vaccine had another advantage: it does not need special refrigerators (between two and eight degrees Celsius).

The Janssen single-dose vaccine began to be used for the group of people over 70 years of age. Later, that age was descending until the decade of the 40 years. But other groups also received her, regardless of her age.

These are: Vulnerable groups from a social, economic and / or labor point of view (such as homeless people, the fruit and vegetable sector and immigrants without regularization of the administrative situation). People who are difficult to vaccinate (large dependents who are difficult to access, those with profound autism and mental illness at high risk of agitation due to their underlying pathology) and people who are difficult to recruit for vaccination (sea workers who carry out deep-sea fishing in long-term campaigns). duration and population in residential or supervised centers).

Janssen was also given to those over 18 years of age in a difficult situation to receive a second dose

Also aid workers who travel on mission to high-risk countries and people who, due to their activity, will not be in Spain on the dates of the second dose.
