Unlike the MCU films, contact with the Cosmic Cube is not fatal. Red Skull manages to get his hands on it. Before using it to conquer the world, he will torture his nemesis, Captain America. He tries to break the American hero by altering reality, without success. Red Skull then changes his mind. The Cosmic Cube allows him to swap his body with that of Steve Rogers, who adopts the appearance of Red Skull and humiliates him in front of Sharon Carter, Captain America’s girlfriend. Steve Rogers becomes a fugitive and has to face the police and even the Avengers. Red Skull, disguised as Captain America, fires Rick Jones, Bucky’s short-lived replacement. However, with the help of a new ally, Sam Wilson, Steve Rogers will succeed in prevailing over his enemy. This saga, which takes place between Captain America 115 and 119, has 2 lasting effects. Rick Jones, fired by who he thinks he is Captain America, will find himself linked to Captain Marvel. But it is above all about the origin of the Falcon, new partner of Steve Rogers.

However, Steve Rogers continues to have his reservations about his country. He therefore reinvents himself as a stateless man, under the identity of Nomad. Inspired by the flamboyant heroes of cape and dagger films, he makes his own costume. Gold and dark blue colors, domino mask and cape in the wind. The latter will also lead to the most embarrassing moment of his career. As he pursues Viper and his troops, Nomad steps on a stub of his cloak, stumbles, and sprawles full length. Viper ran away laughing, not without adding that she knew a hero would end up making a fool of himself like this. Steve Rogers ends up resuming his identity as Captain America. However, nothing is lost: 2 former Bucky, that of the 50s and that of the Heroes Reborn world, will use the pseudonym of Nomad.
