Ukraine conflict on the way to the UN Security Council – VG

LEADED MEETING: Jonas Gahr Støre in the presidency of the UN Security Council earlier Tuesday.

NEW YORK (VG) As chair of the UN Security Council, Norway may get more of the Ukraine conflict under control in the coming days.

Published:

According to VG’s information, it is the United States that is pushing to take the conflict between Russia and Ukraine to the Security Council.

The purpose is to get the members of the Security Council to warn preventively against a possible military conflict in Russia, by conducting a debate on this internally in the council.

In that case, it must happen next Friday or Monday, VG is informed. On Tuesday, February 1, Russia will take over the chairmanship of the UN Security Council in New York.

There are many indications that Russia will try to oppose such urgent treatment at the UN now.

Not impossible

Monday night, Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre (Labor Party) the possibility is open for Norway to chair such a meeting on the Russia-Ukraine conflict:

– It’s not impossible. There are discussions, I understand, between some of the member countries about whether the topic should be raised, Støre said then.

The well-informed American publication Foreign Policy reported earlier in January that the United States plans to confront Russia in a high-profile open-door round in the Security Council – if Russia takes military action against Ukraine seriously.

Formally, Russia, with its veto power, can stop any attempt by the other 16 member states to write a resolution condemning the country.

That is why a verbal confrontation in full public is so relevant, writes Foreign Policy, and recalls verbal clashes in the Council both during the Cuba crisis and the crisis that the United States started against Iraq.

Støre in the UN

– It is not something Norway has taken the initiative for today, but here this is a development that goes from day to day, and we have the presidency into next week. So if it goes in that direction, then we will do the job, said Prime Minister Støre on Monday night.

On Tuesday, he chaired a meeting of the UN Security Council on the protection of civilians in urban conflicts.

On Wednesday he will lead a debate on Afghanistan, where great humanitarian distress has been reported since the Taliban took over. Støre has previously told VG that he will take with him impressions from the Taliban’s controversial visit to Oslo this week.

If there is a Ukraine debate in the Security Council under Norway’s leadership, it is likely that UN Ambassador Mona Juul will sit in the presidency.
