Marco Travaglio Criticizes Justice Reform by Carlo Nordio

During the episode of Otto e Mezzo, broadcast on La7 on Friday 23 June, Marco Travaglio, the editor of Fatto Quotidiano, vehemently criticized the work of Minister of Justice Carlo Nordio and the work of Giorgia Meloni’s party. Travaglio accused them of abandoning their qualities of being a social right and a legal right and instead waging war on the poor and representing an illegal right. He also suggested that with the death of Silvio Berlusconi, the premier should change course towards other profiles in terms of justice.

Massimo Cacciari, another guest on the show, disagreed with Travaglio and pointed out that the right-wing party only received 4% of the votes, indicating that they did not have widespread support. Travaglio denied this and mentioned a specific case of an entrepreneur from Milan who will not be punished for the crime of abuse of office, which Nordio’s reform will abolish next month. Cacciari argued that Meloni has gained popularity because she is seen as a strong figure in the coalition.

Travaglio then questioned why voters did not choose Berlusconi, who represented the third coalition force in the last few policies, instead of Meloni. He argued that not all right-wing voters want impunity and are tax evaders, suggesting that if they wanted to vote for Berlusconi, they would have done so. Cacciari concluded the debate by stating that understanding politics requires considering historical and political contexts, and Meloni was chosen because she was perceived as a strong leader.
