It was clear to everyone involved that Jadon Sancho’s donkey from Borussia Dortmund to Manchester United would take place this summer. The only question was: how much would it cost. The clubs have now agreed on a basic amount of 85 million, which can quickly grow to 95 million. This means that the English winger only ranks eleventh on the list of the most expensive transfers. An overview.

Most expensive transfers in football: twice PSG, then twice Barcelona

The French sheikh club Paris St. Germain was responsible for the most expensive transfers in world football to date. In the summer of 2017, they piloted Neymar from Barcelona to the French capital for a staggering 222 million, and a few weeks later they also brought in the French top talent Kylian Mbappé. However, they only transferred the 145 million for the center forward to Monaco a year later. Previously, a loan deal took hold.

According to transfermarkt.de, third place on the list is shared by Philippe Coutinho and Ousmane Dembélé, who both moved to Barcelona in the 2017/2018 season for 135 million each (including bonus payments). Dembélé struck away from Borussia Dortmund in the summer, Klopp let Coutinho go in winter before he could pull off a similar show. By the way, both have not been able to convince completely.

Most expensive football transfers: João Félix before Cristiano Ronaldo

In fifth place is currently the Portuguese João Félix, for whom Atlético Madrid transferred around 127 million euros to Benfica Lisbon. Incidentally, Atlético had only recently received the money for this transfer from FC Barcelona. They grabbed the previous Atlético striker Antoine Griezmann (sixth place) for 120 million.

In seventh place finally comes Cristiano Ronaldo. The five-time world footballer moved from Real Madrid to Juventus Turin in 2018 for 117 million. His move from Manchester United to Real Madrid in the summer of 2009 landed “only” in twelfth place with 94 million.

Also in the top 10: Eden Hazard’s move from Chelsea to Real Madrid in summer 2019 for 115 million, Paul Pogba’s transfer from Juventus Turin to Manchester United at the beginning of the 2016/17 season for 105 million and the first 100 million transfer in history: Gareth Bales joined Real Madrid from Tottenham Hotspur in 2013.

By the way, Lionel Messi has never generated a regular transfer in his entire life. He has been playing for FC Barcelona since moving from Newell’s Old Boys in Argentina at the age of 13. Yesterday his contract expired there and he can sign wherever he wants. Should he change, he would not cost any transfer again – but certainly a decent bonus.
