Tested: Does this cordless vacuum cleaner sweep the floor with Dyson?

Anyone looking for innovation in vacuuming will quickly find that not one product is the most convenient for all situations. We have a robot vacuum cleaner running, but you don’t have to drag it from one room to another every time. Great for the living room and kitchen, but I prefer to do the hallway by hand. I have been using a Dyson V7 for this for a number of years (we have now arrived at the V11) and it has advantages and disadvantages. It sucks very neatly, can be used as a petty thief and vacuum cleaner and it is easy to charge in its holder. However, he is hideous. The design reminds many of a whipped cream cake. The non-exchangeable battery only lasts a few minutes at the maximum setting and converting from eco to turbo mode is inconvenient.

The Dyson is available in endless versions, with special brushes and attachments, but in the standard version costs about 600 euros. The Roidmi RS60 is even more expensive (670 euros) but you get standard accessories such as a mopping unit (which mops behind the vacuum cleaner), a motorized mattress brush and an animal hair brush. There are also cheaper variants for sale. The RS40 costs more than 100 euros less.

Roidmi is a Chinese brand (part of Xiaomi) that wants to conquer the premium market. They do this by winning prestigious design awards such as the Red Dot and iF with a beautiful appearance, a serious price tag and a website with .dk at the end, to pretend they are Danish.

The battery lasts 70 minutes in the lowest setting. I have not tried that, because I have a life and the lowest setting is also a bit matting. With a button directly under your thumb, you can switch to the middle or turbo setting. In the latter you empty the battery in 10 minutes. I have tested that and it is correct. However, the middle setting is fine and I could vacuum four rooms effortlessly and then I had 30 percent left. In practice, the Roidmi can suck longer than I feel like.

Unlike the Dyson, it is not a guess how long you can still clean. The OLED display indicates exactly how many percent of the battery charge is left. I think it’s a bit unnecessary that you can also see how few calories you burn with vacuuming on that display. But everyone has their own humor, of course. Connecting to an app via Bluetooth also provides few concrete benefits. You can update the software with it, but come on, how much can you really change about the software of a vacuum cleaner?

A nice innovation is the LED lighting at the front. If it is a little dark in front of your nozzle, the light will automatically turn on. Handy if you want to know if there are any samples, or chips, under your bed.

Behind the suction mouth you can place a small mop with a water reservoir above it. You should not imagine too much of the effect of this. In a small room with a smooth floor, it will be slightly cleaner than without. But if you have a carpet, or you have to do a large surface, it is not very practical.

The hanging system is a bit wonderful. You have to mount the magnetic charging station at exactly the right height, so that you can put the vacuum cleaner against it. Simple in itself, but you cannot hang it up. Unfortunately, Roidmi did not help when it comes to storing the accessories. At Dyson you have a handy hanging system for your suction mouths. You have to find a drawer yourself at the Roidmi.

Compared to my Dyson, I think the Roidmi RS60 is an improvement. It is nicer, feels better in the hand, makes less noise and lasts longer. The battery is also easy to replace yourself when it runs out. But 670 euros for a vacuum cleaner does hurt a bit. Even if it can replace your wired vacuum cleaner.
