The jubilation in German politics was huge: In December, electric car pioneer Tesla, in Brandenburg near the capital Berlin (D), announced his worldwide to build the fourth Gigafactory. For the region, this is tantamount to winning the lottery: Tesla plans to employ up to 8,000 people in Grünheide one day and produce up to 500,000 electric cars annually – initially that Models 3 and the new SUV (Model Y).

The mega-factory could have an enormous pull on investors and suppliers from all over the world: they smell the business in the slipstream of Tesla and are already knocking on the doors of the Brandenburg state government. However great the euphoria in local and state politics is – not everyone is enthusiastic about the construction of the Gigafactory. Only last weekend, citizens in the community protested the planned settlement – they fear for the recreational value of this idyllic area with its lakes and forests.

Next demo registered
Not only would up to 90 hectares of forest be cleared on the 300 hectares for which Tesla will probably have to spend around CHF 45 million, but also local animal species such as forest ants and bats would have to be resettled. Therefore, one wants to protest next weekend: According to the police, a private person has registered a demonstration for Saturday on behalf of a citizens’ initiative. Between 50 and 100 people are expected, according to the German magazine “Automobilwoche”.

Local voters Philip Zeschmann of the Free Voters warned that the mood could change. Tesla has now responded and opened an information office in Grünheide this week to respond to citizens’ questions and to show them that their concerns are being taken seriously. Brandenburg’s Minister of Economic Affairs Jörg Steinbach (SPD) said that the information office now offers “continuous dialogue”.

Not signed yet
The attempts at appeasement are no accident. The large-scale project, which is enormously important for Brandenburg, which is not economically bedded on roses, is far from dry: Tesla has not yet signed the contract to buy the property. According to insiders, it should only be a matter of form.

The fact that Tesla is serious can be seen on their website: Tesla is already wooing employees. If everything goes according to plan, construction of the factory should begin in the summer. Production is scheduled to start a year later.
