Teresa Scavelli, the Veronese babysitter killed in Switzerland while defending three children

Palù (VERONA) – “It was fine even scarred instead of in a coffin”. Rita speaks in a faint voice, she is an elderly woman but yesterday, in front of her daughter Teresa’s coffin, she was bent with pain more than years. “He didn’t save a single child, as they say. He saved three, ”he says. “She was like that, she always took care of the weakest, she would have done it even if they were strangers but those children were like children to her. For the two little sisters she was the babysitter and then the four-year-old child of the neighbor upstairs was at home. Teresa saw from the window that the bastard was following the two girls who were returning from school, she ran towards them to protect them, she managed to take them home to safety but that was a devil, she slipped inside with them and did what he did … ». “That” was a 22-year-old Swiss boy named Steve, whom the local press defines as a drifter repeatedly hospitalized for severe psychiatric problems and known to the police for drug abuse. His Instagram profile is the mirror of his instability: one day pro-Islam, the next day against immigrants and the “black lives matter” movement. Wednesday 2 September “what he did” was to kill Teresa Scavelli, who was 46, was the mother of three children and worked as a housekeeper and babysitter for a family in Sankt Gallen, German-speaking Switzerland.

The uncontainable fury of the murderer

Teresa, for everyone Terry, pushed the children in there and stood between them and that boy. He wouldn’t leave them in his hands for anything in the world. He reacted with an irrepressible fury, he took it with her who prevented him who knows what plan drawn by his sick mind. He grabbed a metal pan and hit her in the head several times. There was another woman in the house and it was she who called the police and tried to intervene, causing minor injuries. When the patrol arrived Teresa was still alive and that guy was on top of her, hitting her like nothing could stop him. They yelled at him to stop and raise his hands but he didn’t and the officers fired. He died in that house, next to Teresa who was dying while the ambulance was taking her away. She left a few minutes later, in the hospital. “In life she has always been someone who worked a lot. She had gone to Switzerland to give her children a better future and instead there she is, ”Rita points to the hearse,“ they brought her back to me in a coffin. The last time I heard his voice was half an hour before he died. And think of fate … we talked about the condolences he wanted to do to the relatives of a young dead person … ».

In Switzerland to earn more

Teresa was of Calabrian origin, from a village called Cotronei (in the province of Crotone) where her mother Rita lives. She and her husband, Salvatore Elia, had followed the path of work, landing first in Palù and then in Oppeano, in the province of Verona. They had started a family when they were very young. Terry was 16 when his first son Giuseppe was born, who is now 30 years old. Then came Simone, 28, and finally Sarah, 24, a university student who lives at home with her father (her brothers live on their own). Four years ago, when the opportunity to earn a little more came, Teresa had chosen to leave. The boys were old enough to get by even without her and Switzerland was close enough to go home from time to time. So it went to Sankt Gallen, also counting on the support of family members who live there.

Funerals

For Teresa’s funeral yesterday, the church of Palù was full of people. Salvatore and his three children arrived close to each other, the closest friends had a photograph of her in their hands and in the silence at the end of the ceremony, Sarah’s desperate cry was the most heartbreaking greeting. “A wonderful mother” they repeated to all those three boys these days, “the best you could have.” Before the funeral procession left for the cemetery Rita approached to caress the coffin and speak softly to her beloved daughter. In recounting his sacrifice he has only one word to define the murderer, “bastard”. And it is as if she were speaking to him too when she says that “she did the only thing possible, she chose the life of children”.
