Tensions arose between Iran and Afghanistan over the weekend following attacks on Afghan migrants in the border area. The triggers were reports that Iranian border guards tortured dozens of Afghans and threw them into the border river Harirud. Iran rejected the allegations. Afghan migrants are leaving Iran because of the corona virus pandemic.
Around 2,000 Afghans currently cross the Iranian border every day to reach the Afghan border province of Herat. “Iranian soldiers used shovels and shots to injure and throw Afghan workers into the water,” said Gulran District Governor Abdul Ghani Noori. The Afghan Foreign Ministry launched an investigation into the allegations on Saturday.

According to the first results, at least 70 Afghans are said to have been beaten and pushed back into the water. Authorities from the Afghan province of Herat said Sunday that twelve bodies had been recovered from the river and at least eight other people were missing. A spokesman for the Foreign Ministry in Tehran said that there had been no such incidents on Iranian soil.
