Tennis – WTA – Cincinnati: The table (with the qualifiers)

Posted on August 22, 2020 at 9:40 a.m. – updated on August 22, 2020 at 9:41 a.m.

The WTA season continues from Saturday with the tournament from Cincinnati, relocated to New York. Four Top 10 players will be present, as well as four French women.

After the “small” tournaments in Palermo, Prague and Lexington, the WTA circuit sets its bags on the New York side, where the relocated Cincinnati tournament will take place. A tournament that will serve as a dress rehearsal for the US Open (which will begin on August 31) and where we will also find the same players. In the absence of Ashleigh Barty and Simona Halep, who have decided to skip the American tour, Karolina Pliskova, world No. 3, will be the No. 1 seed in this Cincinnati tournament, while No. 2 will be Sofia Kenin, the winner of the last Australian Open. Two other members of the Top 10 will be present at Big Apple, and not the least: Serena Williams and Naomi Osaka. If logic is followed (which has rarely been the case in the last big women’s tournaments), Pliskova will face Sabalenka in the quarterfinals and the winner of Kvitova-Osaka in the semi-finals. At the bottom of the table, Kenin will be opposed, if all goes well, to Madison Keys, the defending champion, in the quarter-finals, then to Serena Williams or Johanna Konta in the semi-finals.

Quatre Bleues in New York

Four Frenchwomen are present in New York. The best of them, Kristina Mladenovic, will challenge Sevastova in the first round, then possibly Elise Mertens in the second. At the bottom of the table, Alizé Cornet will face the American McNally, invited by the organizers, before a possible second round against Sofia Kenin. Caroline Garcia, for her part, will face Sloane Stephens, former winner of the US Open. As for Océane Dodin, she won her two qualifying matches and will be opposed to another qualifier, the American Bellis, in the first round, before a possible second round against Sabalenka. Recall that Fiona Ferro, brilliant during the break of the season (two victories in the Challenge Elite FFT) then victorious in the resumption tournament in Palermo, decided not to go to the United States. Announced present in the tournament table, Kim Clijsters finally had to forfeit due to an abdominal injury and will be replaced by a “lucky loser”. The Belgian could be handed over in time to participate in the US Open, for which she has received an invitation.
