When Hitchcock asked our Age and Scarpelli for help

Alfred Hitchcock’s 60th film, his fourth last, was not a blockbuster in 1966, nor a cult of critics, but seen today it beats everyone and makes us regret the talent of a great man. Which, at 67, for “The torn curtain”undecided, he also asked our Age and Scarpelli (who were not enthusiastic about it) for an opinion on the script.

Deprived of his director of photography, trusted musician Bernard Herrmann, who did not bow to the diktat of the song desired by the producers, of the faithful editor, Hitchcock found himself working with a new crew and a new system of filtered light.

The two protagonists had also been imposed, Julie Andrews (the favorite was Eve Marie Saint), returning from the singing triumphs of Mary Poppins, Hitchcock was always afraid he would suddenly gurgling, while Paul Newman was not a James Stewart old style American. “He is an actor of the method,” Hitchcock confided to Truffaut in the immortal interview: it doesn’t seem like a compliment. The intrigue (similar to Mark Robson’s in Stockholm), is classic from spies who came from the cold: the American physicist who pretends to betray his homeland and, pursued by his secretary girlfriend, goes as far as East Berlin to steal the nuclear secrets discovered by the Germans. We in the audience, as always, are informed.

Classic double game, guarded by Hitchcock with all the honors and some moments of glory (the escape by bus, the fire in the theater) but above all a cruel murder on a farm, with means of cooking and head in the oven, one of the most long and gory in the career of the author of Psycho, which appears here in a hotel lobby. Hitchcock, to immerse himself in the right mood, had made a tour of Copenhagen, Berlin, Sweden and Leipzig before shooting. Divided into three acts and three suspects, the film frames the astonishment and sighs of Miss Andrews, future immense Victor Victoria.
