The constant security and privacy issues that Zoom has had during the coronavirus pandemic has questioned the desirability of using video calls as a way to communicate. That is why what was announced by Telegram gives some hope in users.
The messaging application reported that it will have end-to-end encryption in its video chats. Right now, the feature will be available in alpha mode in your Android app, while iOS users will have to wait a bit.
One of the downsides to its closest competitor WhatsApp is that it won’t allow group video calls for now, although it plans to run them in the coming months.
On encryption, Telegram states that, “the Telegram voice and video call library uses an optimized version of MTProto 2.0 to send and receive packets, consisting of one or more end-to-end encrypted messages of various types (candidate list of ice, video formats, remote video status, audio data transmission)”.
In your support channel, the messaging application has a small tutorial that indicates how conversations can be encrypted.
Telegram further maintains that, “all video calls are protected with end-to-end encryption. To confirm your connection, compare the four emojis that appear on the screen for you and your chat partner. If they match, your call is 100% protected by time-tested encryption that is also used in secret chats and Telegram voice calls ”.
The app also featured a new set of animated emojis to celebrate its seven years.
