“Teenager digs underground cave after argument with parents over tracksuit”

14-year-old Andres Canto from Spain had a falling out with his parents and started digging a hole in his garden, only eight years later turning it into a full living space.

The guy quarreled with his parents because they forbade him to wear a tracksuit for a walk in a neighboring village. After a quarrel, Andres grabbed his grandfather’s pickaxe and began to dig the earth in the garden in order to throw out his own anger somewhere. Over the course of eight years, the small hole turned into an underground cavern with steps leading to two separate rooms. In the hiding place, the guy put a bed, a mirror and an armchair, and also equipped the room with speakers, sockets, a coal stove and Wi-Fi.

Andres is studying acting in Murcia but is still taking time to work on his project.

“During the pandemic, I made great progress in equipping the cave, but now I have less time for it. I only dedicate four hours a week to dig the cave,” Andres said.

The dug cave occupies approximately five square meters of the garden. “My whole family and friends are used to the cave, some even like to help by digging the ground,” he explained.

“Sometimes I would come across a big rock, and after hours of digging, I could be upset that I did almost nothing,” Andres admitted. At first, the guy took out the soil with a bucket, but later he studied the technique of archaeological excavations and the work became easier.

Subsequently, the guy began to equip the rooms and for this he used arched entrances and vaulted ceilings with reinforced columns to prevent collapse.

Andres said it’s a cool place to stay in the summer, with a constant 20 or 21 degrees during the hottest months of the year. However, he added that sometimes this room is flooded during heavy rains, so it attracts insects, spiders and snails.
