Another 1,700 people detained in Almaty – Abroad – News

A total of more than 10,000 people have been detained in Kazakhstan due to protests and riots. Meanwhile, the situation in the country has stabilized.

Protests against the sharp rise in liquefied gas prices began on January 2 in Zhanaozen, in the southwest of the country.

In the following days, the protests took over all of Kazakhstan and escalated into violence. In addition to economic demands, political demands began to emerge, including the complete departure of former President Nursultan Nazarbayev and his clan.

Human rights activists have called on the Kazakh government to ensure that all detained protesters receive a fair trial.

Kazakh President Kasim Zhomart Tokayev has called the protests a “coup attempt” and a terrorist attack. He has appointed a new prime minister and ordered the government to suppress further demonstrations.

Political scientists admit that Tokayev used the crisis to concentrate power in his hands and get rid of Nazarbayev’s presidential predecessor.

In the meantime, it is still unclear exactly who the people who broke into government buildings and police stations were.
