In Georgia, as part of the “Week of Dignity” campaign, on Monday, July 5, the “Dignity March” in support of the LGBT community with the slogan “Come out in solidarity” was announced at the beginning of the month. However, several hours before it began, hundreds of anti-sexual minorities arrived at the rally.
At the call of the patriarchate of the Georgian Church, the arrivals attacked journalists, accusing them of “gay propaganda”. Journalists received a bottle and stone cold, as a result of which the operator of the Georgian TV First Channel was taken to the hospital with injuries. The other journalists were helped to evacuate by the police.
The angry mob of homophobes then went to the Tbilisi Pride office, where they were not allowed to enter the police. However, some LGBT opponents managed to sneak onto the balcony and tear down the rainbow flags that had been hung there, which were torn to pieces and burned.
Following these hostile actions, the Tbilisi Pride announced the cancellation of the march, describing what was happening in the city as “a declared war on civil society, democratic values and the country’s European course”.

Earlier, the Georgian Interior Ministry called on LGBT activists to abandon the “Dignity March” due to security risks.
A criminal case has been initiated for the attack on journalists. The church has also condemned violence against members of the press and called on gay opponents to protest peacefully and without violence.
