Ukraine accused Russia of illegally treating Ukrainian prisoners of war and using them for political purposes, Reuters reports.
The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry insisted on humane treatment of captured foreigners fighting on the side of Ukraine.
The department called on Moscow to strictly adhere to the provisions of international humanitarian law, including the 1949 Geneva Convention, which sets international legal standards for humanitarian treatment.
They point out that “all foreign nationals and stateless persons” fighting for Ukraine on Ukrainian territory were voluntarily accepted into military service and international humanitarian law should apply to them as well.
