Taylor Swift’s Sold-Out Concerts in Seattle Cause Earthquake: Seismic Activity Triggered by Fans and Sound System

US singer Taylor Swift’s sold-out concerts in Seattle triggered seismic activity equivalent to a 2.3-magnitude earthquake. Seismologist Jackie Caplan-Auerbach told the BBC News server that it was either the fans of this popular singer or her sound system that caused it.

Swift broke a local seismological record with her performances at Seattle’s Lumen Field on July 22nd and 23rd. It was caused in 2011 by American football fans celebrating a touchdown by Marshawn Lynch of the NFL team Seattle Seahawks during a game against the New Orleans Saints.

The difference between the NFL game and Swift’s recent concerts was only 0.3 degrees, but “the tremors were twice as strong,” said Caplan-Auerbach of Western Washington University. “I took the data from both concert nights and quickly noticed that it seemed to be the same pattern. When I overlaid them, they were almost identical,” she added.

The concerts in Seattle took place in front of a total of 144,000 fans over two evenings. “Seattle, this was truly one of my favorite weekends ever. Thank you for everything. For all the cheering, screaming, jumping, dancing, singing at the top of my lungs,” Swift said on Instagram after both performances.

The Seattle concerts were held at the end of the American leg of the Eras tour – her first tour in five years. The 12-time Grammy winner has ten original albums to her credit, but is re-recording some early records due to a dispute with music manager Scooter Braun.

Music concerts have been known to cause seismic activity before, such as the Foo Fighters concert in New Zealand in 2011.
