Tanzanian health authorities issued an Ebola virus warning on Wednesday as authorities in Uganda declared a new Ebola virus disease outbreak in the center of the country.

“We have received information on the Ebola outbreak in Uganda and the government has activated surveillance teams in high-risk areas,” Aifello Sichalwe, chief medical officer of the Tanzanian Ministry of Health, said over the phone. .

Mr. Sichalwe said his ministry has activated surveillance teams in the high-risk areas of Kagera, Mwanza, Arusha, Mara, Kigoma and Dar es Salaam.

According to him, the ministry has also stepped up the supply of medical supplies to these regions.

Screening controls for Ebola have been introduced at all points of entry into the East African country, including airports and borders, he said.

Sichalwe said health authorities are also raising public awareness of the disease, including its symptoms of fever, headache, fatigue and nosebleeds.

On Tuesday, the Uganda Virus Research Institute confirmed a case of the so-called Sudanese strain of the Ebola virus after testing a sample taken from a 24-year-old man.

Ebola virus disease is a serious, often fatal disease affecting humans and other primates.
