Taliban-Iranian forces involved in firing due to misunderstanding

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Regime forces Taliban from Afghanistan reportedly clashed with border guard troops Iran to trigger a shootout between the two sides on Wednesday (1/12) afternoon.

“Clashes erupted in the afternoon between Iranian border guard forces and the Taliban following a misunderstanding on the border near Nimroz province (Afghanistan),” Iran’s Tasnim news agency quoted a report as saying.

Iran has a 900 km border with Afghanistan. Until now, the government of President Ebrahim Raisi does not recognize the Taliban regime which took power in Afghanistan since last August.

Iran’s foreign ministry spokesman, Saeed Khatibzadeh, confirmed the clashes on his country’s eastern border. He said “border disputes between residents” in the area sparked firefights between the troops.

Even so, Khatibzadeh did not directly refer to the clashes involving the Taliban regime forces.

“The situation has been resolved. The shooting stopped after contact between the border guards of the two countries,” he said in a statement, as quoted by AFP AFP.

Meanwhile, Tasnim reported that firefights broke out after “an Iranian farmer crossed the protective wall on the border that Iran had erected”.

The news agency said Taliban forces responded to the incident by thinking the farmers had crossed the Afghan border.

Taliban forces immediately opened fire and were followed by retaliatory gunfire from Iranian forces.
