Taliban Arrest Female Governor of Afghanistan

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

guerrillas Taliban arrested a female politician, Salima Mazari, who became Governor of Chaharkint District, Balkh Province, Afghanistan.

Salima is one of three women in Afghanistan to serve as governor.

As reported Times of India, Friday (20/8), until now Mazari’s whereabouts are unknown. His figure came to the fore because he had spoken out loudly against the Taliban.

When the territory he leads is in danger of being seized by the Taliban, Mazari has expressed concern for the fate of its residents, especially women. He does not want his citizens to return to living in fear under the Taliban regime.

“In the provinces captured by the Taliban there are no more women who dare to leave their homes, not even in the cities. They are all locked up at home,” Mazari said in an interview in the town of Mazar-i-Sharif before it was occupied by the Taliban last week.

Mazari comes from the Hazara ethnic community who are Shiites. In the eyes of the Sunni Taliban, Shiites are seen as enemies.

The Hazara community is also often the target of attacks by the Taliban and the Islamic State of Khorasan terrorists in Afghanistan. The deadly attack occurred in May when an ethnic Hazara school in Mazar-i-Sharif was attacked, killing 80 female students.

Mazari also recruited volunteers to help with security before the town of Mazar-i-Sharif was taken over by the Taliban.

The Taliban are reportedly continuing to hunt for Afghan government and military officials who went into hiding after the capture of the capital Kabul over the weekend.

The atmosphere in Kabul and a number of provinces is also tense as the Taliban continue to patrol.

Meanwhile, Afghanistan’s Vice President, Amrullah Saleh, declared himself acting president after President Ashraf Ghani fled to the United Arab Emirates (UAE). He is currently rallying support with Ahmad Massoud, son of the late Afghan hero Ahmad Shah Massoud, to rally troops to fight the Taliban.
