[台北 24日 ロイター] – Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen on Thursday described the unified local elections, to be held on the weekend of the 26th, as a vote on his leadership and his commitment to “love” Taiwan and ensure peace with China .
In a video message, he underlined that voting for the Democratic Party candidate in government is equivalent to voting for himself. “I am also working very conscientiously and responsibly to ensure that Taiwan has a strong foothold internationally and am committed to maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait,” he said.
On the other hand, the largest opposition party, the Kuomintang, which has traditionally emphasized close ties with China, says its own party is also committed to protecting Taiwan’s democracy and freedom.
Former Kuomintang veteran Ma Ying-jeou wrote on his Facebook page on Thursday that voting for the DPP promises war, while supporting the KMT promises peace.
