Switzerland: The maturity exams left to the choice of the cantons – Switzerland

The cantons are authorized not to organize written maturity exams this year. The Federal Council gives them a choice. Several had requested cancellation in order to take into account the conditions imposed by the coronavirus.

The Federal Council agreed on Wednesday with the opinion of the Conference of Cantonal Directors of Public Education (CDIP). The government considers that this solution makes it possible to take into account the different degrees of attack by the pandemic and the educational conditions resulting from the ban on teaching in the classroom.

In cantons where examinations will not take place, certificates will be awarded on the basis of grades for the year. This assessment is sufficient to guarantee the students’ ability to study, the Federal Council considers. The universities will have to recognize the certificates regardless of the basis on which they were established.

The Confederation would have preferred to adopt a uniform national solution. But in view of the differences between cantons, the government preferred to clarify the situation for the schools and the candidates concerned. Thus, graduates of general secondary II education courses are guaranteed to receive their maturity in time for the continuation of their studies this fall.

Professional maturity

Preparation for the vocational baccalaureate exams has also been severely disrupted, and the situation varies from canton to canton.

After consulting the vocational training partners, the Federal Council has decided that the 2020 professional maturity will be awarded solely on the basis of school marks. This measure guarantees equal opportunities for all candidates and the comparability of diplomas.

These provisions are valid until October 29 for professional maturity and until August 31 for gymnastic maturity. (ats / nxp)
