Tom Hagen arrested: Norwegian millionaire wife probably dead

Did millionaire Hagen kill his wife? The real Scandinavian thriller in 5 points

Fake kidnapping, missing victim, suspicious husband: The case of Norwegian millionaire Tom Hagen and his wife could have been a crime story. But it is real – and many questions are still open.

What happened?

Norwegian millionaire Tom Hagen was arrested on suspicion of crime. His wife, Anne-Elisabeth Hagen, disappeared 18 months ago. To this day, there is no trace of the woman. On October 31, 2018, the then 68-year-old wife Anne-Elisabeth Hagen had disappeared from the family house in Lørenskog near Oslo, and there has been no sign of life from her since. The police suspected a kidnapping for a long time, but have now arrested the husband on suspicion of crime.

The whole country is wondering where Anne-Elisabeth Falkevik Hagen is. The longer the millionaire’s wife disappeared, the less the investigators believed in the survival of the woman.

Investor Tom Hagen has been one of Norway’s 200 richest people for years. His fortune, which he made primarily with electricity sales and real estate, is said to have amounted to around 1.9 billion Norwegian kroner last year – that is the equivalent of around 170 million euros. Despite the wealth, Hagen lived a relatively secluded life in Norway.

Fake kidnapping and murder?

After the wife’s disappearance, a letter with a ransom note in cryptocurrency equivalent to the equivalent of CHF 10.2 million was found in the Hagens’ house. The woman was allegedly overwhelmed in the bathroom.

One was in contact with the kidnappers. This was tough and only takes place via a digital platform. The crux: the alleged kidnappers had never presented a sign of life to the woman – which criminologists described as unusual in such cases. Therefore, the investigators later changed their main hypothesis and suspected that the kidnapping was only faked and that Hagen was probably killed.

“There was no kidnapping,” investigative director Tommy Brøske said on Tuesday. “In other words, the police believe that the case has been shaped by a clear, planned deception.”

According to the police, the last sign of life of the long-time wife Hagens was in the form of a phone call with a family member on the morning of October 31, 2018 – Tom Hagen is said to have been at his work in Lørenskog at this time.

Suspected of the husband

Brøske says that the suspicions of Tom Hagen have gradually increased over time. A court is due to decide on Wednesday whether he will be held in custody for four weeks. The attorney of the Hagen family, Svein Holden, did not initially want to comment on the case, but only wanted to speak to the suspect.

On the way to work, 70-year-old Tom Hagen was arrested on Tuesday morning. Shortly afterwards, forensic technicians in the family home and at his workplace were already busy securing possible new evidence.

Possible motive and open questions

The woman is said to have previously told several people that the Hagens’ marriage had been turbulent for years. According to the police, she also wanted to end the marriage – this is reported by the Norwegian newspaper “Verdens Gang” about the arrest. According to your information, Hagen had been investigated in secret last summer.

On Tuesday, the police did not want to provide any more details about a possible motive for the businessman. The investigation continued, and further arrests could not be ruled out, said police prosecutor Åse Kjustad Eriksson. According to police chief Øystese, several key questions remain open: In addition to Hagen’s role in the crime and possible other people involved, this includes above all where Anne-Elisabeth Hagen is located. The woman has not been found to date.

Reactions from friends and the public

The case has kept the whole of Norway in suspense since the wife’s disappearance. It is arguably the most dramatic missing person case in Norwegian history. The police speak of the “Lørenskog affair”. Lørenskog is the municipality east of Oslo where the Hagen family’s house is located.

The couple’s friends were horrified by the arrest. «When Tom’s news came in today, I got a shock – mainly because I think Lisbeth will not come home now. Now she is gone forever, »said a friend of Anne-Elisabeth Hagen, who wanted to remain anonymous, the newspaper« Dagbladet ». A friend of Tom Hagen told the newspaper: “This is completely unreal.” And Hagen’s business partner Bjørn Brodwall said: “It is a tragedy, whatever the outcome.” (cki / sda / dpa)
