Switzerland: more organic, more variety

The fine “Swiss organic berries”, and regardless of whether they are the well-known strawberries, raspberries, blackberries or currants: With Räss wild berries they thrive as well as special berry varieties. The so-called “superfood berries” range from goji to sea buckthorn Aronia, says the Bio Suisse blog.

Together with his brother Christoph, Simon Räss has created an organic berry paradise in Benken in the Zurich wine region. In addition to the classic berry varieties and healthy superfoods, they also cultivate innovative niche crops such as cornberries and gooseberries or rock pears. The berry specialist gives an insight into the cultivation and tells of the challenges, quality requirements and responsibility.

A strong team

They are young, motivated and innovative. The Räss brothers complement each other well: 34-year-old Simon is an agronomist and has economic know-how thanks to his MBA business degree. He takes care of crop management and crop protection and has a close eye on what the various berries need and when to mulch, chop or harvest. His younger brother Christoph covers the mechanical side by studying mechanical engineering and is responsible for the workshop and weed management. An important part of the organic berry production, because with organic cultivation you cannot fight weeds simply by means, weeding by hand would be an enormous challenge with the large area.
