One of the most popular foods in the world is the potato or potato. It is known that its glycemic index increases with heat, so the healthiest way to consume it is boiled. However, many have found another alternative in sweet potatoes, also known as sweet potatoes or sweet potatoes. So which really is healthier?

“Unlike potatoes, sweet potatoes can also be eaten raw. The product is very high in fiber, so its glycemic index—the ability to raise blood glucose levels—is negligible. Sweet potato is a good prebiotic for our microflora, and even for this reason it is the first choice for its health benefits,” explained nutritionist Elena Solomátina.

In a interview with Vechernaya Moscow, the nutritionist pointed out that the shoots and leaves of sweet potatoes can also be consumed. According to her, it is so versatile that it can be fried, baked and even added to porridge and even raw in salads. Its caloric value raw form equals 60 kilocalories compared to the 77 kilocalories of potatoes.

“Even after being cooked, sweet potatoes do not lose their healthy properties, nor do they increase in caloric value. For example, 100 grams of sweet potato fries have no more than 161 units. With normal potatoes, this figure reaches 192 units per 100 grams of product,” explained Solomátina.

Unlike sweet potatoes, potatoes cannot be eaten raw, but when choosing one of these foods, it should also be taken into account that the excessive fiber content present in sweet potatoes makes them take longer to digest and this will require more energy.

“For example, the classic boiled potato is much easier to digest. But even this increases the amount of insulin in the body, which is then converted to fat, which doesn’t happen if sweet potatoes are eaten raw, boiled or fried.”


Solomátina recommended eating small amounts of raw sweet potatoes for a normalized dose of fiber. On the other hand, he concluded that potatoes are best eaten only when they are boiled and cooled so that the body can get as much of their nutrients as possible.
