Sweet drinks, harmful to the female heart

This work was carried out with 106,000 women aged 52 years on average, without any cardiovascular disease at the start of the study. A first observation reveals that the biggest consumers of sugary drinks – sodas, flavored waters, fruit juices with added sugars – are younger, more often smoky, obese and have a less balanced diet than others.

Regarding the effects on cardiovascular health, the results show a 20% increased risk of suffering from cardiovascular disease (stroke, coronary heart disease, etc.) in women consuming this type of sugary drink daily, compared to those drinking it only. rarely.

Effects on the organism

This observational study does not prove a cause and effect link. However, the authors make several hypotheses explaining these effects. “The sugar in drinks would increase cardiovascular risk due to several physiological effects. Among these is an increase in glucose and the concentration of insulin in the blood, which can increase appetite and therefore lead to obesity, “explains Cheryl Anderson of the University of California at San Diego and main author of this study. Another supposed effect on the body, “too much sugar in the blood is associated with oxidative stress and inflammation as well as a risk of type 2 diabetes and therefore atherosclerosis, an environment conducive to several cardiovascular diseases”.

Note: Certainly, low-fat drinks can be an alternative to sodas, by reducing the intake of sugar, they contain other artificial substances such as aspartame. It is therefore advisable to “favor the consumption of water, the cheapest and healthiest drink of all,” recall the authors.
