A woman has been arrested in Sweden for allegedly locking her son in their apartment for 28 years. The now 41-year-old man became malnourished during that time and has almost no teeth, Swedish media report Tuesday.
The woman is suspected of illegal deprivation of liberty and of causing physical harm.
A police spokesman says the man was “locked up for a long time” in the apartment in Haninge, a Stockholm suburb, but declined to comment on media reports that the victim had been detained for 28 years.
According to reports in the newspapers Expressen in Aftonbladet the mother took her son out of school when he was twelve years old and has locked him in the apartment ever since.
A family member found the son after the 70-year-old mother was taken to hospital on Sunday, reports Expressen. The man had inflamed ulcers on his legs, could barely walk, had almost no teeth and had limited speech. The police only confirm that the man is in hospital and has non-life-threatening injuries.
According to the relative, the mother and son lived in an apartment that looked like it hadn’t been cleaned for years. The man was lying on a blanket on the floor when he was found by the relative.
