Suzanne Nossel: “In the United States, book censorship in schools is assuming frightening proportions”

Mark Twain, William Shakespeare or Toni Morrison – these are some of the geniuses of world literature now banned from many American schools. This censorship, while nothing new, is assuming unprecedented proportions and forms. Threatened librarians, liberticidal laws voted against “obscene works”, individuals who arrive armed at school meetings or read aloud passages from a novel deemed “pornographic”.
