Hillary Clinton, the loser in the 2016 US presidential election, claims to be a member of the electoral college that will elect this year’s winner. She is running as an election woman for the state of New York, Clinton told SiriusXM radio station on Wednesday. “I’m an election woman in New York.” In the USA the president is not elected directly by the citizens, but by the members of the so-called Electoral College.

The state of New York provides 29 of the total of 538 voters. The 538 voters in turn are elected by the citizens at the state level. A US presidential candidate needs at least 270 votes to enter the White House.

On the program “Signal Boost”, Clinton was confident that she could vote for the Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden and his runner-up Kamala Harris. “I’m sure I’ll vote for Joe and Kamala in New York, so that’s pretty exciting,” said the former US Secretary of State and presidential candidate.

They don’t think incumbent Donald Trump will win the November 3rd election. “I can’t see him getting re-elected after the damage he’s done, and I can’t imagine another four years of this abuse and destruction.”

The Electoral College is a controversial institution in the USA. Through the electoral college, a candidate does not need to get a majority of the nationwide votes. It is possible for a president to be elected by a majority in Electoral College without having received most of the votes.

This has happened five times in US history, most recently four years ago: At that time, Clinton received around three million more votes nationwide than Trump; the Republican won a majority of 304 votes in the electoral college.
