Suspected deadly stabbing Dresden is a convicted Islamist

The man who was arrested for a deadly stabbing this month in the German city of Dresden turns out to be a convicted Islamist. On October 4, two tourists from North Rhine-Westphalia were attacked with a knife in Dresden. One of the two did not survive the attack.

For a time it was unclear who was behind the attack. A knife with DNA traces was found at the crime scene, which led police to a 20-year-old Syrian. Yesterday he was arrested. The man was already convicted in 2018 for ‘supporting a terrorist organization’ and ‘inciting to commit state-dangerous crimes’.

Refugee

The suspect is known to the police as a dangerous Islamist. He came to Germany in 2015 as a refugee and has been radicalized since the beginning of 2017. On his Facebook page he called for jihad and the killing of unbelievers. During his trial, he also said he was preparing an attack himself.

At the time of the crime, the suspect had only been released for five days. He was still under judicial supervision. Why the two tourists were targeted, and whether there is an Islamist motive behind the act, is not yet known.
